History of Battell Elementary School

Battell was the 2nd Elementary School in the Mishawaka School Corporation. The original Battell School, built in 1900 on land owned by Joseph Battell, was located on Main Street, between Battell and Broadway. In 1908, with the growing enrollment, a second unit was built next to the original building and was connected by a hallway. In 1920-1921 a third addition was added to accommodate the junior high classes, but by 1949 the junior high was removed, leaving only the K-6 students. This building still stands in the same location but no longer is a school, it was transformed into the Battell Center and Battell Apartments. The new Battell School building, now located on Cedar Street between Battell Street and Broadway, was opened on August 26, 1981.
